Circe was a sorceress and minor goddess in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of a Oceanid, a water nymph.

In Homer's Odyssey, Circe advised Odysseus on how to listen to the sirens without becoming their prey,[1] and on how to survive passage through the channel that housed Charybdis and Skylla.[2]

During the Peloponnesian War, a woman living alone among pigs, wild boars, and lions on Atoll Point of Paros Island introduced herself to the Spartan misthios Kassandra as "Circe of the Oceanids".[3]
