Chalkis City (Ancient Greek: Χαλκίς) is the main town of the island of Euboea in Greece. In classical antiquity, it was a polis located in the Dirfi Foothills in the region of Abantis Islands.
History
In ancient times, it was a thriving city with a long rivalry against its neighboring city of Eretria. Their many conflicts vying for control of colonies and trade culminated in Chalkis' attempted enslavement of Eretria following their ruin in the second Persian invasion.[1]
Chalkis was best known for its metalworking and bronze weapon manufacturing. Because of this, the city was forced to sign a treaty swearing loyalty to Athens during the Peloponnesian War.[1]
