Assassin's Creed: Cinders (stylised as assassin's creed : cinders) is a short Japanese webcomic, written by Seishun no Haiboku (English: Of Youth and Defeat) and serialized in Shōnen Jump+ as a runnerup in the collaboration project "Draw the game!", a contest for fans to submit their works based on Ubisoft properties and have them published in Shōnen Jump. It was released on 14 April 2021 and follows the death of Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Assassin's Creed: Embers.[1]

Plot[edit | edit source]

The story begins with a montage of Ezio's various exploits during his life with Ezio's final letter overlayed as narration until his death, observing Flavia Auditore and Sofia Sartor in a market square.

A year later, Sofia and Flavia are visited in their fields by an old man wearing a hood, who reveals himself to be an elderly Leonardo da Vinci. Once inside, Leonardo reveals he faked his death by crafting a replica dummy of himself and left his entire inheritance to Salaì. Now simply a traveller, Leonardo came to search for Ezio, who Sofia informs him died a year prior. Leonardo remarks that he's happy that Ezio spent his last moments in peace with his family, as he feared that due to Ezio's nature as a "seeker of truth" there would be no rest.

Leonardo reveals that he crafted a powered brace that uses air compression for himself to compensate for the growing issues with his left arm, and claims he was once the same way as Ezio was, being a great inventor that was lauded yet ignorant of how grapes are grown. To combat this, Leonardo decided to see the world as it is rather than as he was limited to in "life".

Feeling that both Leonardo and Ezio were similar, Sofia shares with Leonardo Ezio's final letter and prepares him a room to sleep. That night, Leonardo dreams of a younger him and Ezio in Venice during Carnevale. Ezio asks Leonardo to show him the truth of the world that Ezio was never able to understand. Ezio comments on the ephemeral nature of the lights of Venice, that they will one day be reduced to cinders, and then compares it with his never-ending struggles as an Assassin. Finally, he asks what he will leave behind.

The next day, Flavia is sitting in the fields, drawing a picture of her mother, and Leonardo joins her to make one of his own. Flavia doubts her skills and asks Leonardo for advice, but he reassures her that she is already talented. He then draws a brush from a device similar to a Hidden Blade, which he claims he made so that he could quickly jot stuff down during his travels. While drawing, Leonardo recalls reading Ezio's letter and confides in Flavia that, if Ezio were still getting into danger, he was planning on inviting him to accompany him on his travels, but he realised that wouldn't have been necessary since Ezio found what he was looking for in his family.

After finishing her drawing, Flavia turns to look at Leonardo but finds him gone, with a finished drawing of Sofia left where he once sat. Amazed by the drawing, Flavia calls for her mother.
