A war contract is a legal agreement by a government to a private individual to render payment in exchange for their military service.

During the Peloponnesian War, both the Athenians and Spartans offered military contracts across Greece to enlist the aid of mercenaries into their war effort. Among the most successful of these mercenaries was Kassandra the Eagle Bearer, who opportunistically accepted contracts from either side depending on their alignment with her own goals.[1]
