The Republic of Pirates, also referred to as the Flying Gang,[1][2] was an anarchic proto-state formed by British pirates in the city of Nassau in 1706, during the Golden Age of Piracy. Although its founders proclaimed themselves a republic based on the principle of pure, unbridled freedom, its lack of any administrative apparatus prevented it from becoming the ideal state they envisioned. During its decade-long existence, it served as the base of operations for some of the most infamous pirates of this era, including Edward Thatch, Jack Rackham, and Charles Vane.[3]
The community's attempts to build a functioning country failed due to the fundamental contradiction between anarchy and statehood, resulting in it struggling to provide basic sanitation and needs, such as medicine,[4] supplies, and rum,[5] to its people by 1718.[4] The pressure to salvage this dwindling dream drove Thatch to blockade Charleston, South Carolina, for medical supplies in May 1718, while other pirates such as Benjamin Hornigold eventually lost faith and defected to the British Empire, turning against their former brethren.[6][7][8]
On 22 July 1718, the Caribbean Templar and new Bahamian governor Woodes Rogers arrived in Nassau with a mission to eradicate the pirates and reassert control over the island.[7] This he tried to accomplish via the same peaceful means that previously proved successful in Madagascar;[9] he offered a royal pardon for all pirates with a deadline of 5 September 1718.[7] Although the British suffered a setback in the form of Edward Kenway and Charles Vane breaking through the blockade with a fireship and escaping, the empire ultimately re-annexed the breakaway, lawless proto-state by the end of the year.[10]
The republic's collapse marked a turning point in the Golden Age of Piracy, as piracy in the Caribbean greatly declined while the Golden Age eventually came to an end several years later. Despite this, the republic's legacy lived on through Edward Kenway, one of its last surviving members, who eventually retired from piracy to join the Assassin Brotherhood.[3] In 1725, Edward would go on to establish the Zhang Wei Union, a merchant company in Southeast Asia that was inspired by the Pirate Republic's principles of freedom and equality. This way, the Union served as a spiritual successor to the republic, albeit a legitimate one that only engaged in ethical business practices.[11]
