Angharad ferch Meurig, also known as Angharad of Seisyllwg, was a 9th century noblewoman from southwestern Wales. She was the wife of Rhodri the Great who ruled the Kingdom of Gwynedd.

Biography[edit | edit source]

A member of the noble house which ruled the kingdom of Seisyllwg in southwestern Wales, Angharad was the daughter of King Meurig[1] and was tutored by scholars from Cor Tewdws as a girl In the mid-9th century, Angharad married King Rhodri of Gwynedd whose kingdom had spanned over a large part of Wales. Although the marriage initially started of as part of a political alliance, Angharad and her husband developed a strong bond, with her measured thoughtfulness countering Rhodri's impetuous nature.[2]

Circa 873, following the capture of Rhodri's brother Gwriad by Vikings led by Ivarr the Boneless, Angharad accompanied her husband into Mercia's Sciropescire to negotiate the return of Gwriad in exchange for the departure of all Welsh troops from the shire.[3]
