A longship was a type of ship used widely by the Vikings during their explorations and conquests.
In the 9th century, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir commanded one named the Sea-Chariot while traversing England.[1]
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
As the name suggests, longships were long and slender wooden ships. The bow was often decorated with carven, stylized figureheads.[2] During travel, shields were kept on the sides of the ship, within easy reach.[3]
