The Chouans (English: "The silent one, owls, etc.) were a group of French Royalist insurgents active during the French Revolution. Their bastion was in the Vendée region of western France. They were horrified by the radical anti-clerical revolutionary direction and raised troops against the new national army. The term could also denote rural, anti-revolutionary, pro-royalist sentiment in general.[1]
In 1793, the French Assassin Arno Dorian infiltrated a house occupied by the Chouans, and discovered intel about them for the Council.[2]
In 1795, Arno helped the French Army lieutenant Joachim Murat in launching an attack on the Royalists by sabotaging the Chouans' artillery.[3]
Later in the Revolution, the Chouans intimidated those people who did not support their movement by burning their vineyards. Arno killed them to end the attacks.[4]
