Edward Kenway was a virtual representation of one of Edward Kenway's genetic memories, relived first by a research analyst at Abstergo Entertainment in 2013 through the Animus Omega,[1] and then by another user as an altered representation through the Animus EGO.[2]
After an attack on the ship he was aboard, Edward found himself stranded on a deserted island with an Assassin.
Amidst a heavy storm and enemy cannonfire, Edward rolled a cannon into its position on the deck.
A cannonball struck behind Edward, knocking him down and killing the crewman. Kenway stood up, extracted wood shrapnel that had embedded in his right arm, and returned to his cannon.
Edward looked at the approaching ship and saw an Assassin casually walking on a spar behind the jib and along the forecastle.

He ran aft to the quarterdeck, where Captain Abel Bramah stood by the helm.
Edward took the wheel and attacked smaller gunboats that accompanied the larger ship.
Lightning hit the enemy ship and made it vulnerable.
Edward got in close to the ship and sank it. As the crew celebrated, the gunpowder magazine caught fire.
Kenway and some crew ran to deal with the fires, but a larger explosion forced them back. Abel shoved them back even as the fire continued to grow.
The Assassin appeared and assassinated him, with Edward being the only witness. They stared each other down for a moment before both were blown overboard by the magazine explosion. Edward landed in the water, the impact rendering him unconscious as he began sinking. He remembered a conversation that he had with his wife Caroline Scott while they lay in bed, some years earlier.

Edward smiled.
Caroline frowned.
Edward scowled and looked at her.
Edward rose to a sitting position on the edge of the bed.
He looked back at her. She looked down in contemplation of his idea.
Edward turned to sit facing her.
Edward's mouth flattened in a grim line and he looked down, unable to reply. The flashback ended and Edward woke up drowning deep in the water, surrounded by dead crew and wreckage from both ships. He swam up to the surface and towards the beach.
He looked at the burning debris around him.
He stumbled to the shoreline, dropped to his knees, and rolled to his back in exhaustion. He laughed looking up at the sky, amused at his survival. The injured Assassin dragged himself up from the waters, his left hand trying to staunch heavy bleeding from his gut.

Edward slowly raised himself to sit up. He grabbed a washed up alcohol bottle and looked inside, but seeing it was empty, he tossed it aside.
Edward rose to his feet and stood over the man, reaching for his belt.
The man swiftly drew a flintlock pistol with his right hand. Surprised, Edward stumbled back to land on the sand while the man struggled to his feet and kept his weapon trained on him.
He attempted to shoot Edward but failed as the gunpowder was wet. Seeing his weapon was useless, the man discarded it and ran off into the jungle. Edward laughed, stood up, and prepared to give chase.
He climbed tree trunks in pursuit, navigating above the jungle floor.
Edward climbed up a series of ladders and wood huts to a tower viewpoint and looked for the Assassin.
Edward saw the man leap from a hut to a tower and then perform a Leap of Faith to the waters below.
He copied the man's actions and continued his chase.
The man shot Edward, who chased him deeper into the jungle until they reached a cliffside clearing with low shrubs and wide puddles. Edward attacked him, and because of the man's severe injuries, he was easily defeated and killed.
Edward dragged the body to a rock and removed a pouch from the man's belt. Opening it, he withdrew a small glass cube and a letter from the Governor of Cuba Laureano de Torres y Ayala.

Edward stripped the corpse of its robes, dragged it into the bush to obscure it from anyone, and donned the clothes himself. He inspected the set of Hidden Blades, but being unskilled in their usage and seeing that they were irreparably damaged besides, he tossed them into the brush.
Edward heard a gunshot in the distance and investigated the source. Perching on a tree hanging off the cliff, he saw a ship in the bay.
He saw that a squad of British Army soldiers were holding a man and his crew hostage for questioning.
Some of the crewmen attempted to escape.
The Redcoats shot the crewmen, killing them.
Edward killed the British soldiers and rescued Stede. He helped him to his feet.

Edward looked at the ship in the bay.
Stede uneasily indicated the dead body beside him.
Edward gaped, caught off-guard by the accusation, before smiling and evading the question.
He stuck out his hand for shaking.
He turned around, drew a sword, and used it to pry open a crate that he thought held loot, only to see nothing of value and close the lid.
Edward walked over to inspect another crate, with no luck.
Edward started swimming towards the ship.
They swam to the ship.
He sat on an adjacent crate to Edward's right.
Edward sailed out of the bay.

Just as they left the bay, a whale jumped nearby.
Stede spoke to the few crew that remained onboard.

A whale jumped near the ship.
The ship exited the bay into open waters. Stede got off his crate and walked behind Edward to the other side of the quarterdeck.
He leaned against the railing and looked out.
Edward assumed Duncan Walpole's identity, rescued Stede Bonnet, and sailed for Havana.
If the memory is replayed while Edward wears the shark hunter outfit, it shows him wearing Hidden Blades even when he technically had not retrieved them from Duncan's body yet.
A graphical error happens when Edward is approaching the shore after waking up underwater, where overcast, rainy skies change within seconds to cloudless, sunny weather.
The cutscene where Edward picks up Duncan's robes is meant as a visual allusion to a similar scene from the 2009 video game Assassin's Creed II in which Ezio Auditore da Firenze uncovers his father Giovanni's robes in the memory "Family Heirloom". However, unlike Ezio, who was born into the Assassins via the House of Auditore and willingly joins their cause, Edward inverts the connection between character and the group by misappropriating the outfit to serve his own ends.
