Returning from the fight in the bar, Edward discovered the maps and the blood vial he took from Duncan Walpole had been confiscated by the Spanishsoldiers, and set out to recover them.
Merchant:How long will this hanging take, man? I don't mean to hang about all day for the captain.
Soldier:Quick as anything, sir. Captain Mendoza needs only to hang the man, then he will deliver your payment.
Merchant:I don't want reales, mind. I want goods. Things I can sell. Tobacco. Rum. Sugar.
Soldier: Si, si! (Yes, Yes!) We have much fine sugar. Crates we took off a fat Englishman last night.
Merchant:Englishman?
Soldier: Si. (Yes.) Sugar from Barbados. Very fine. We hold it in the Castillo after the man started the fight last night. He ran, left his sugar behind. Very fine.
Merchant:Well that's a start. Shall I accompany him to the Castillo?
Soldier:No sir. Captain Mendoza will have it sent to you, I believe. You will see.
Merchant:Good lord! Is that big brute your Captain Mendoza?
Soldier:No sir. He is El Tiburón. El Tiburón, Governor Torres' man.
Edward tailed Captain Mendoza and stole his key, after which he snuck into the fort lockup and retrieved his maps.
Soldier 1:We, ah... stashed their goods to sell. The sugar and such. Hey Carlos. You hear that Captain Mendoza ordered us to take the fat Englishman's goods last night?
Soldier 2:I've been briefed on the matter. The Captain will inspect them after the hanging. I believe a buyer has been arranged.
Soldier 1:That was fast. And when is the hanging?
Soldier 2:The bell! It's starting!
Edward:This Captain Mendoza plans to move our goods. Can't have that.
Bonnet:I've never seen a hanging before. Barbaric! We are going to watch, aren't we?
Edward:Not this time, mate. Better if you stay out of sight.
Bonnet:Of course, of course. Someone needs to be at the ship, should they return the goods.
Civilian 1:They say this pirate sank one of Mendoza's ships.
Civilian 2:I just hope he wasn't tortured before his death sentence.
Town Crier: Venid todos a presenciar los momentos finales del famoso pirata Samuel Calstock. (Come all to witness the final moments of notorious pirate, Samuel Calstock). Nuestro muy distinguido y honorable capitán Mendoza presidirá la ejecución. (Our most distinguished and venerable Captain Mendoza will preside over the execution.)
Soldier 3:The last hanging I saw was a big old sheep-shearing Welshman. Popped his head right off his neck.
Slaver:A hanging is all well and good. I've come for Captain Mendoza. He wouldn't be dodging his debts now, would he?
Soldier 3:No, no. The man on the platform there is the Captain.
Slaver:Ah. Then let the show begin!
Mendoza:For the crimes of forgery, arson, smuggling, theft, and murder, all in the name of piracy, Samuel Calstock, you are hereby sentenced to be hanged by the neck until dead. Do you have any last words?
Calstock:Like many of you, I came to the West Indies for a better life. It is my view...
Mendoza pulled the lever opening the trap do under the pirate, cutting off his last words and his life.
Mendoza:Let it be known that we offer no quarter to pirates and smugglers in Havana.
Mendoza came down from the scaffold and spoke to the slaver.
Mendoza:Ah, Señor. You've come for the sugar.
Slaver:I've come to see your debts paid.
Mendoza:Si. Indeed. Follow me.
The two left the site of the execution.
Mendoza:Have you enjoyed your time in Havana?
Slaver:I am only here to collect what's owed. I too have debtors, captain.
Mendoza:Surely you have time for the local girls and local drink, Señor?
Slaver:A public hanging is enough fun for one day. I'm told there is a curious bauble amongst the cargo you seized.
Mendoza:In truth, I cannot say what it is. But if you have more slaves to trade, it could be yours. You will see it for yourself soon enough, Señor. The Castillo is just ahead.
Edward:The Castillo? I'll just slip in and out with my goods.
Soldier 4:If anyone got into the Castillo they'd never reach the top alive.
Soldier 5:The Captain says he wants double guard on the upper store room, so that's what we do. Don't think so much.
Edward:My stuff is nearby.
Edward approached Mendoza and the slaver.
Mendoza:We have more sugar than we owe, that is certain, Señor. Perhaps you will want that as well?
Slaver:Perhaps. But my interests lie with this bauble you've been teasing. Let's see it.
Mendoza:It is safely locked away. Let us settle the sugar first.
Edward:This Mendoza has a key that I should like to get my hands on.
Edward got the key from Mendoza.
Edward:Found a key. Let's see if it works.
Edward entered the locked store room and retrieved the dispatches and item he had taken from Duncan Walpole. He looked at the several boxes of Stede's sugar, then left without it.
Edward:Here's my goods. Time to tell Bonnet the bad news.
Edward then returned to Bonnet.
Edward compensating Bonnet for the lost sugar
Edward:Sorry about the sugar. I've only one pair of hands.
Bonnet:Oh, it's no great loss. Uh, I've got a... plenty of cargo here to make a profit of my trip.
Edward:Will you stay here long?
Bonnet:For a few weeks, yes. Then back to Barbados, to the tedium of domesticity.
Edward:Don't settle for tedium. Sail for Nassau. Live life as you see fit.
Bonnet:Haven't I heard that Nassau is crawling with pirates? Seems a very tawdry place.
Edward:Not tawdry. Liberated.
Bonnet:Oh, God, that would be an adventure. But no, no... I'm a husband and a father, I have responsibilities. Life can't be all pleasure and distraction, Duncan.
Edward:Hey, ah, Bonnet. The name's Edward, in truth. Duncan's only a handle.
Bonnet:Ah... a secret name for your secret meeting with the governor.
Edward:The governor, right. I think I've kept him waiting long enough.
