The Sinkholes of Herakles was the a region in southern Argolis, Greece.

Myth[edit | edit source]
The Sinkholes of Herakles were named after the legendary hero Herakles, following his victory over the Nemean Lion, which he'd bested by trapping the beast in a sinkhole.[1]
The region was also, infamously, the site of the death of Hippolytos, the son of another legendary hero; Theseus.[1]
5th century BCE[edit | edit source]
The site of Hippolytos' death became a sacred place following his demise, with people bringing in offerings. By the time of the Peloponnesian War, the Daughters of Artemis had also made a campsite there.[1]
