Nell Robinson was the manager for the Aurora Equestrian Troupe. After the troupe disbanded, she and her husband, Hugh Robinson, started to work in a costume and fancy dress store, Robinson & Co: Purveyors of Theatrical Apparatus, Costumes, & Stage Properties.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Troupe days[edit | edit source]

Very little is known about Nell Robinson's past, except at some point, she joined the Aurora Equestrian Troupe. She later married Hugh Robinson, who was part of the troupe as the "African Hercules."[1]

In 1851, the troupe opened up at the Crystal Palace at the Great Exhibition as Nell watched from within the crowd after taking care of the ticket-holding.[1] After two years in London, she and her troupe traveled to multiple cities in Europe eventually found a temporary base in Vienna.[2]

In 1855, while in Frankfurt, Nell began to take care of their leader, Major Wallin and his daughter, Tillie Wallin, after both were struck with typhoid. Although both Wallin's recovered, she and the others noticed Major Wallin became ill once more as he started to be delusional. Nell, Ariel, Jovita Ferreira, Hugh, and Pierrette met and talked about the future for the troupe. Due to the Major's health, she promised to manage the props, tickets, accounting, and booking performances. After the acrobat Pierrette Arnaud offered the idea of permanently locating to Birmingham, Nell and the rest of the troupe agreed.[3]

Life in London and helping Pierrette[edit | edit source]

After many years, the troupe unfortunately dissolved as Nell wrote to Pierrette about Major Wallin succumbing to his poor health.[4] In 1861, the Robinson's received both Pierrette and Tillie at their stope, despite Arnaud being out of contact for four years. However, Nell, Hugh, and Tillie were shocked to hear Pierrette's apology for leaving them for her promise to Ada Lovelace. Nell promised that they all are there for her and swore to help in her task.[5]

In 1862, Nell was given Ada's notes to hold for safe-keeping by Pierrette in their shop while the rest of the remaining troupe aided Arnaud on her mission. In fact, she also repaired and resewn Simeon Price's cloak for Arnaud as well.[6] After the mission was successful, she was visited by Pierrette and Simeon, who told her everything that transpired, as she gave back the notes to Arnaud.[7]

Later life[edit | edit source]

By 1870, Nell and Hugh continued their business and stayed in contact with their fellow troupe members, even Pierrette, who came back to London after eight years. However, after Tillie's death, her son Spider became an orphan.[8] Along with Ariel, the Robinson's took their time to raise Spider and even provided for his education and work ethic.[9] However, despite all of their best efforts, Spider soon became relentless and had to live with Pierrette and her friend Anne Blunt.[10] However, he soon ran away at fourteen years old from them.[11]

In 1889, Nell and Hugh visited the recent gravesite of Ariel Fine, who died at sixty-eight. Along with Jim and Pierrette, they paid their respects. Fortunately, Spider came back to pay his respects to his late guardian and was caught by Arnaud, who hugged him.[12]

Personality and skills[edit | edit source]

Nell Robinson was descended from Africa and was known to be quite managerial, from running a circus troupe and their needs to later running a costume and dress store with her husband.[1][2][3][4]
