Dianthe: Difference between revisions

Dianthe was a Greek woman from Mykonos who lived during the 5th century BCE. She was a lover of the Athenian commander Podarkes, which resulted in the birth of their daughter Kyra.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Before the Peloponnesian War, Dianthe and Kyra often visited Podarkes in his house in Mykonos City, where they also met Otonia. Eventually, Podarkes sent Dianthe a letter telling her to stop visiting him or speaking about Kyra and her parentage. Whether Dianthe disbelieved him and continued as before, or Podarkes decided to act and ensure she would not talk is unclear, but he eventually sent a troop of Athenian soldiers to Dianthe's home to kill his lover and Kyra. Dianthe was slain in front of Kyra, but the girl managed to flee.^[1]

When the Spartan misthios Kassandra reached the Silver Islands and joined the rebels' cause, Otonia caught her attention and led her to learn about Kyra's past, including Dianthe. While doing so, she discovered Dianthe's remains in the abandoned house.^[1]

Dianthe is a Greek female name derived from the words θεός (theós) and άνθος (ánthos), meaning together 'godly/heavenly flower'.
