Delos Island

Delos is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea. Alongside its sister island, Mykonos, Delos formed the Silver Islands.

Given its enormous religious significance for the ancient Greeks, the island as a whole was regarded as a holy sanctuary, a status reinforced by its enchantingly picturesque environment. Its influence became even more immense when the Delian League was established because its Grand Temple of Apollo housed the alliance's silver treasury.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Mythology[edit | edit source]

In Greek mythology, Delos was where Leto, cursed by Hera so that she couldn't give birth on solid ground, gave birth to the twin deities Artemis and Apollo.[2]

Peloponnesian War[edit | edit source]

In 454 BCE, Perikles forcibly relocated the silver of Delos to Athens, stoking the resentment of the Delian leaders who furiously aspired to have them returned. [citation needed] During the Peloponnesian War, a corrupt strongman Podarkes, a member of the Delian League branch of the Cult of Kosmos, ruled the Silver Islands, leading some of the population to rebel against him. The rebellion's leader, Kyra, sent out requests for aid to both the misthios Kassandra, as well as Sparta.[3]

Geography[edit | edit source]

The island of Delos is a flowering island of white beaches, divided up into three regions:

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Some of the houses throughout Greece appear to be inspired by Villa Kerylos which itself was based on noble houses built in Delos in the 2nd century BC.
  • There are some clay stoves at marketplaces throughout Greece. These are based on a particular clay stove (anthrakia) found at Delos.[4]
