Sigmund was a Norseman who lived in Stavanger in the late 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In 866, Sigmund attended a small gathering in the market, where Thorsteinn Silvertongue addressed the false claims of selling a faulty sail to Bjorn. When Sigmund asked why Bjorn would lie, Thorsteinn revealed that he wanted Harald Fairhair to turn against him and favor Bjorn for tomorrow's expedition. Rallied in support of Thorsteinn, he attended the mannjafnadr between Thorsteinn Silvertongue and Bjorn at Harholl, where the former proved his innocence in front of Harald Fairhair. He later concurred in the subsequent exile of Bjorn.[1]

Along with his fellow Norseman, Sigmund joined many raids for the following four years. In 870, he recounted a tale at Alrekstad, talking with Frode, Kort, and Thorsteinn, but also began to think about settling down elsewhere from their homeland. Upon hearing of Thorsteinn's journey to leave for England, he joined his crew to leave with him.[2] However, within a year, upon Frode leaving to navigate for jarl Guthrum, he tried to navigate Thorsteinn's ship himself but crashed it multiple times. Thus, Sigmund left the crew after Thorsteinn lost faith in his ability.[3]
