Henry Morton Stanley (born John Rowlands; 1841 – 1904) was a Welsh journalist and explorer. Stanley is best known for searching for the lost explorer David Livingstone. In 1871, he found Livingstone in Ujiji in modern-day Tanzania,[1] upon which he supposedly uttered the words, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"[2]

In September 1876, Henry was invited to an international conference held by King Leopold II of Belgium about exploring parts of Africa. During the conference, Henry met with both the king and his private guest, Countess Konstanze von Visler. After their meeting, Stanley was invited back to her home in the Alps and was assigned to have Konstanze come back with him.[3]
