Fort Santiago
Fort Santiago (Spanish: Fuerte de Santiago) is a former citadel in Manila, Philippines, which has since become a historical landmark. It was built from 1590 to 1593 on the order of Miguel López de Legazpi, the first Governor-General of the Philippines.[1]
During the Spanish administration of Manila between the 16th and 19th centuries, the fort's dungeons were used to hold numerous criminals, war prisoners and political enemies of Spain.[1]

In 1725, after Jan van Aert, the Chief Navigator of the Dutch East India Company, was arrested on allegations of orchestrating the assassination of Governor-General Fernando Manuel de Bustillo Bustamante y Rueda, he and his ship's crew were imprisoned in the dungeon underneath Fort Santiago. There, they awaited their sentencing until the Assassin Edward Kenway infiltrated the fort to rescue them.[2]
After taking advantage of a protest in the streets to break into the fort undetected, Edward incapacitated the guards and freed Jan and his crew. As he escorted them out of the fort, Edward decided to ask Jan if he was indeed responsible for Bustamante's assassination. Before the navigator could respond, both he and Edward witnessed the protest outside turn into a violent riot, which the Asssassin went to investigate, leaving Jan and his crew to find their way back to their ship by themselves.[2]
