"She's a mercenary. Ubba used her for men and information. But that relationship soured now that Burgred is all but defeated. From what I've heard, Tonna has a hunger for two things, soft silver and a stern hump. Neither of which earns you true loyalty."
―Sigurd describing Tonna to Eivor, 873.[src]-[m]

Tonna was a Viking chieftain who operated in Ledecestrescire, England during the 9th century.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Activities as a mercenary[edit | edit source]

Tonna came to settle in Ledecestrescire amongst the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy during the late 9th century, establishing a settlement on a hill that she came to name Tonnastadir after herself. Around this time, the region's control were contested between the Kingdom of Mercia under King Burgred and the Viking faction Sons of Ragnar, led by the brothers Ivarr and Ubba Ragnarsson. Knowing that any interference in the conflict would lead to the downfall of herself and her clan, Tonna took on the role of a mercenary, secretly lending her services to both the Mercians and Ragnarssons to survive and protect her clan.[1]

By 873, the conflict between both Mercia and the Vikings escalated when the Ragnarssons took the town of Repton. King Burgred had previously paid off the Ragnarssons during their early invasions but this was not enough to deter their ambition to take the throne of Mercia for themselves. When the Ragnarssons sought to obtain Burgred's whereabouts, they employed Tonna to obtain intel on his location, eventually learning of his final stand at Tamworth Fortress.[2] Meanwhile, Burgred himself also employed the services of Tonna, paying her a large sum of gold to keep him informed of any major activity by the Ragnarssons in the region. She was also asked to deter the Ragnarssons away from Ledecestre and Templebrough Fort should they appear in any of the Ragnarssons' plans.[1]

Dealing with the Raven Clan[edit | edit source]

Eventually, Tonna's arrangements with the the Ragnarssons fell short due to a dispute over a hoard of hacksilver. Tonna confronted Ubba in Repton, revealing she was also aware that Burgred had sent a weregeld to deter war. Tonna was chased away by the arrival of Ivarr and Eivor Varinsdottir and returned back to her settlement. In response, she also sent a letter to Burgred in Tamworth, alerting of the Ragnarssons preparations to storm the fortress with the help of Sigurd.[2]
