Commander Herbert L. Ogier, Jr. (c. 1923 – 2002) was a member of the United States Navy who served as captain of the USS Maddox in July 1964.

Biography[edit | edit source]

On 30 July 1964, Commander Ogier, along with the rest of the Maddox crew, participated in a ruse whereby they attacked the North Vietnamese Army while disguised as South Vietnamese combatants. This served to create a diversion for Alekseï Gavrani to reach the northern side of Hòn Mê.[2]

The following day, Ogier discussed the event with Captain John J. Herrick, arguing that they were underestimating the North Vietnamese and asking that he speak with Gavrani, hoping to avoid starting a war.[2] On 2 August, tensions grew further between the North Vietnamese forces and the Amercians. During the confrontation, Herrick commanded Ogier to open fire on the Vietnamese torpedo boats. The incident would later become known as the Gulf of Tonkin incident.[3]
