Dover is a city in Kent, England.

History[edit | edit source]

In 1660, the new English Parliament proclaimed Charles II as king after the death of Richard Cromwell thanks to General George Monck's efforts. Charles II sailed from Breda to Dover, where several ships welcomed him with cheer.[1] Monck greeted him in Dover and they marched toward London to secure the throne.[2]

On 8 February 1788, the Granny Smith, a merchant ship used by Byron Jackson to smuggle goods into England, docked in Dover after a two-day voyage from Calais, France, where Jackson had rescued the French Templar Élise de la Serre and her associate Hélène. After the two women thanked him for transporting them to England, Jackson went to bypass custom houses while Élise and Hélène left Dover, heading to London to meet the Carroll family at their home in Mayfair.[3]

Two months later, Élise, her mentor Frederick Weatherall, and Hélène fled back to France from the Dover beach in order to escape from Peter and Mrs. Carroll, who sought revenge for the death of their daughter May, killed by Élise after the Carrolls had betrayed the group.[3]
