Alortun

Alortun (lit.: farmstead of the alders) was a Viking camp located by the Air River in Yorkshire, England. In the 9th century, it was headed by Faravid, a close companion of Halfdan Ragnarsson.

History[edit | edit source]

In 876, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir traveled to the camp to rendezvous with Faravid and his men. Before meeting with Faravid, she overheard a conversation about lack of glory and wealth from Halfdan from Ulf to Faravid. Upon her arrival, she greeted Faravid while Ulf was not pleased and told the "crow" to go back home. Eivor retorted by threatening to physically harm him to teach a lesson. Faravid soon dismissed his warrior from their company.[1]

Upon his leave, Ulf spat on the ground, in defiance to Eivor's presence. Faravid and Eivor talked about raiding and how the Picts were following suit to raid Elmet Monastery. Further on, Faravid asked why Eivor was really here, since his numbers are sufficient enough. She responded and Faravid took her word. From here, Faravid commanded his men to go against Picts, as Eivor joined in their effort.[1]
