Ivaldi's Forge was an ancient Isu forge in the center of Asgard. In charge of the city's forge, Isu dwarf Ivaldi created all the weapons and materials for any of the Æsir or Vanir of Asgard, especially their leader, Odin.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Isu Era, Odin went to visit Ivaldi, who was confronted himself by The Builder, who asked about how magic affected the Æsir and Vanir of Asgard. However, Ivaldi was dismissive of The Builder, who later saw Odin enter. While The Builder left, Odin and Ivaldi discussed what business the Builder had with the blacksmith, which Ivaldi answered wittingly. Soon, Ivaldi told Odin to leave him to his work, but Odin asked for one more favor.[1]

Odin asked Ivaldi to create an unbreakable chain to bind Fenrir, but Ivaldi offered the cord Gleipnir instead to further tighten the beast Odin desired. However, Ivaldi needed rare ingredients from a riddle to create the cord, which Odin agreed to find and promised to free Ivaldi as a reward. After finding a "a cat's footstep"[2] and "the root of a mountain,"[3] Odin traveled back to Ivaldi's Forge and gave Ivaldi the ingredients.[1]

Ivaldi let Odin know that it would take time to make the cord. Soon after, Freyja came in and accused Odin of devaluing her by promising her to The Builder by marriage. Odin reassured everything was fine and that Freyja would never be pawned away as a bride. Settled, Freyja later advised Odin to confront Loki on his numerous failings.[1]

Through his ventures, Odin inspected the area of Ivaldi's Forge for Ymir's Tear Stones for Ymir's Altar in Asgard. Odin found one stone in a chest hidden atop some scaffolding and one more tear stone in a room within a crevice, behind the main table.[4]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

It's unknown what or how many Pieces of Eden came from Ivaldi's Forge, besides Gleipnir. Claims from myths have been discussed that certain works, like Mjölnir and Gungnir, were products of his work or his alleged sons.
