Asutai (died c. 1280s), was a prince of the Mongol Empire and the fourth son the Great Khan Möngke. He was, like his father, a member of the Mongolian Templars.

Biography

In August 1259, Asutai followed his father during his campaign against the Song dynasty during the Siege of Diaoyu Castle. On the 11th, he found his father murdered in his tent and then tended to one of his commanders, Bayan, who passed out after being wounded and poisoned from his father's killer. When the commander woke up, Asutai commended him on his efforts but revealed his father's demise. He divulged that he plans to lie to the men about his father dying of an illness earlier. However, he offered Bayan to assist him to lay his father's body to rest, to which Bayan accepted.[2]

On their march to Burkhan Khaldun, Asutai led the Kheshig and then spoke to Bayan, whose skills and resilence impressed him. He revealed how he and his father became part of the Templars. While traversing besides the Black River, he revealed how the Templars used war as a tactic for their vision and offered Bayan a place in both the Kheshigs and the Templar Order. After giving Bayan some time, Asutai soon spoke with him again during Möngke's funeral ceremony, where Bayan accepted his offer.[3]
