The Abstergo Foundation Rehabilitation Center, commonly referred to as the Abstergo Foundation or simply Abstergo Madrid, is a subsidiary company of Abstergo Industries based in Madrid, Spain that, like its parent company, operates as a front for the Templar Order.
History
The Abstergo Foundation building was constructed around and upon a 12th century chapel.[1]
Headed by Dr. Sofia Rikkin, who believed she was on the verge of a scientific breakthrough, the Foundation held a number of convicts who they forced into the Animus in order to explore their genetic memories. Many of whom were either descended from the Assassin Brotherhood.[2]
Under Dr. Sofia Rikkin's supervision, the facility also worked on innovations to the design of the Animus,[3] including an anchored iteration of the device which allowed the user to physically relive the genetic memories of their ancestors,[4] and a compact, portable version of the technology that offered greater mobility to the Animus itself.[3]
While ostensibly, the Foundation's goal was to find a genetic "cure to violence" by locating a specific Apple of Eden, the project was actually just another one of the many led by Alan Rikkin to obtain Pieces of Eden for world domination.[2]
On 22 October 2016, Callum Lynch, a descendant of the 15th century Spanish Assassin Aguilar de Nerha, was brought to the facility by Sofia Rikkin and placed in their Animus. After several sessions in the Animus, the Templars succeeded in locating Aguilar's Apple of Eden, but were forced to flee the facility when its inmates organized a revolt and overcame the guards.[2]
