Abraham Ortelius (14 April 1527 – 28 June 1598) was a cartographer and geographer. He was the creator of what many consider to be the first modern world atlas, first published in 1570,[1] the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.[2]

At least two of Ortelius' illustrations made into Peter Beckford's collections: one of the maps from the 1570 printing,[1] and a detail featuring Magellan's ship, "Victoria".[3] Both of these would eventually be acquired by Welsh pirate Edward Kenway.[3][1]
