Harriet was an Anglo-Saxon woman who lived in Wincestre during the 9th century. The sister of the Order of the Ancients member Ealhferth, Harriet held a strong position against both the Vikings and the Order of the Ancients presence in England.
Biography
Like Ealhferth, Harriet grew up in the north of England and followed the tenets of Christianity along with her family. During the Viking expansion in England, her family was attacked and her mother died from a raid over the mother's copper ring. Compared to Ealhferth, her disdain for Danes grew as well as her brother's, but she remained faithful to God while Ealhferth disavowed the religion, secretly. After some time, Harriet and Ealhferth moved to Wincestre, but Ealhferth was inducted into the Order of the Ancients some time along the way.[1]
At the "funeral" of the late Bishop Ealhferth, Harriet was heard praying over her brother's "dead body" while she talked to the attendees. However, Harriet was confronted by the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan and after some discussion, Harriet revealed her part in this funeral sham. Yet, Harriet called the guards onto Eivor, who quickly defeated them. Harriet was later confronted again and she revealed that her brother was attending the witan and going to dethrone King Aelfred. Harriet believed Ealhferth was going to convince the king to step down, yet Eivor called her a damned fool and raced to Witan.[1]
After the assassination of Ealhferth, Harriet came running in and fell down in tears. Mad at the shieldmaiden, Harriet asked why Ealhferth had to die but Eivor stated that he was part of the Order and wished to strike down King Aelfred. Showing her a key from Ealhferth, Harriet stated that Eivor showed her kindness throughout this ordeal while the Order led her brother astray. Harriet told Eivor that the key opened a door at Ealhferth's home and that her answers may be there.[1]
