Ali Baba (died 860s) was a famous merchant who lived in Baghdad during the 9th century, where he owned an estate in the district of Karkh with his daughter Murjana. Ali Baba came to deal with a group of thieves known as the Forty Thieves, led by their King and had a hideout in the south of the city. An exaggerated version of his encounter with the criminals and their rumored treasure was later written in a collection of Persian and Middle Eastern of stories titled One Thousand and One Nights, and it soon became one of the book's most infamous stories.

Behind the scenes

In the original tale, Ali Baba is a woodcutter and survives the ordeal with the thieves, though they kill his merchant brother Cassim after he gets trapped in the cave. Murjana is not his daughter but becomes his daughter-in-law after foiling the thieves' multiple attempts to kill Ali Baba.
