Blowpipe

The blowpipe was a weapon that was used by Assassins such as Edward Kenway and Aveline de Grandpré.
Used as a silent and deadly weapon, the blowpipe functioned in a similar way to poison darts. Edward obtained a blowpipe from Mary Read during a slave raid on the Assassin camp on Tulum, and made use of non-lethal berserk and sleep darts.
Berserk darts would cause a target to attack anyone within close range, including guards, animals and Edward himself. When the effect wears off the target dies. Sleep darts would cause targets to be knocked out for a short amount of time, allowing Edward to sneak past unnoticed. Both types of blowpipe darts can be used to overwrite the effects of the other, Berserk Darts can rouse targets effected by a sleep dart and Sleep Darts can pacify a Berserk target and stops the target from dying via the Berserk dart timeout.
Both members of Caribbean Assassins and Guardians of Long Bay use blowpipes.
Aveline's blowpipe contained lethal and berserk darts. The weapon first belonged to the Assassin François Mackandal, before it was passed down to Aveline by her Mentor, Agaté. While disguised in her lady persona, Aveline made use of a parasol gun, given to her by Gérald Blanc, which contained a mechanism similar to the blowpipe.[1]
Trivia

- Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag
- Edward appears to be somewhat resistant to the effects of blowpipe darts, as seen in "A Man They Call the Sage", when he is momentarily stunned by an Assassin's blowpipe dart, but recovers soon afterword.
- If Berserk darts are used on a civilian they will become hostile and attack any nearby guards, other berserk darted civilians, or Edward if they detect him. If detected by a Berserk civilian, they will attack him and he is unable to attack or counter their attacks, unless they are shot by a sleep dart, killed with firearms, or die when the berserk dart wears off.
- Berserk and Sleep Darts can be used to hunt wild animals, Sleep Darts cause animals to fall asleep allow them to easily skinned. Berserk Darts can kill animals (excluding monkeys) via the dart timeout kill effect however it does not make them anymore aggressive then they are normally. Any species of monkey that is hit by a sleep dart they will fall to the ground and die on impacting the ground, while berserk darts will cause them to simply flee. They can also be used on domesticated animals as well.
