Ben Alder

Ben Alder (Scottish Gaelic: Beinn Eallair) is a mountain in the Scottish Highlands, home to a fort of the same name. The fort was nestled into the mountain, as if it had been carved out of the rock itself, with four towers of different heights and a massive main keep. Before being massacred by the Templars, it was also the stronghold of Sören's clan, and, by extension, an operational center for the Scottish Brotherhood of Assassins.

History

Legends say that the old fortress had been built by the Gaels as a stronghold in their efforts to conquer Scotland and expand Dál Riata, their kingdom.

Ever since Sören's clan took hold of the castle, it also became a considerable strategic asset to the Brotherhood, with only a chosen few knowing of its existence. During the flourishing era of the Scottish Brotherhood, a few decades prior to 1296, it functioned as the nerve center through which passed the men and the information which made countering the Templars possible. However, the Templars eventually found the location of the castle and decimated the clan in a great battle that took days and also left sections of the fort in ruins. Sören, who had been away when the battle occurred, was the last living member of the clan and inherited the castle.

In 1296, following their escape from Cornavii's attack at Scone, Sören and his band left for Ben Alder. There, he trained Fillan in the ways of the Assassins through the rest of the year, until Deorsa came to call upon them in early spring 1297.
