Atreus was a king of Mycenae and the father of Agamemnon and Menelaus in Greek mythology.

Pausanias wrote that the ruins of Mycenae hid underground chambers where the kings of Mycenae stored their treasure, Atreus included. In the 1870s, archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann led excavations at Mycenae and assumed the buried monuments outside the citadel were the treasuries Pausanias mentioned, dubbing the largest monument the Treasury of Atreus.[1]
