Abraham Ortelius (14 April 1527 – 28 June 1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer. He was the creator of what many consider to be the first modern world atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum,[1] first published in 1570.[2]

At least two of Ortelius' illustrations made it into Peter Beckford's collections: one of the maps from the 1570 printing, and a detail featuring Magellan's ship, Victoria.[3] Both of these would eventually be acquired by the Welsh pirate Edward Kenway.[4]
