Vortigern was a ruler of Britannia in the 5th-century, though his existence is contested by scholars.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

According to legend, Vortigern recruited the mercenary brothers Hengist and Horsa to protect his people against invaders for a monthly sum. When peace was achieved, however, and more and more Germanic tribes came to live in Britannia, the brothers asked Vortigern to increase the payments. They asked for more and more until Vortigern refused. In response, the Germanic tribes waged war against all the British tribes, beginning the era of the Anglo-Saxons in Britain.[2]
