Suphia (died 48 BCE) was an Egyptian healer who worked under Nefertari in Nitria during the reign of Ptolemy XIII. The mistress of Rudjek, the Nomarch of the Saqqara Nome and a member of the Order of the Ancients, she sought revenge for the death of her beloved.
Biography
Early Life
Suphia was a healer who served as one of Nefertari's assistants in Nitria, a natron mine in the Saqqara Nome. At some point prior to 49 BCE, she met and fell in love with Rudjek, the Nomarch of the nome, becoming his mistress, and learning of his association with and cryptonym among the Order of the Ancients.[1] At some point in 48 BCE, Suphia found Rudjek's corpse in the Bent Pyramid, with his killer nowhere to be found. To ensure that her beloved would navigate the afterlife safely, Suphia buried his body in a tomb behind the main chamber, leaving mummified herons to honor his namesake. She also appropriated the shrine of Anubis within the pyramid for Rudjek, and visit occasionally to pay respect to him.[2]
