Sais

Sais (Ancient Greek: Σάϊς) was an ancient Egyptian town located west of Lake Mareotis in the Sapi-Res Nome.

History

During the 1st century BCE, the town was governed by the strategos Sefetu, an ally of Taharqa, a member of the Order of the Ancients known as the "Scarab".[1] Sefetu enforced heavy taxation, imposed a strict curfew, and used spies to watch the movements of everyone leaving or entering Sais, causing unease among the population. This unease resulted in numerous acts of resistance, such as the smuggler Jeska helping residents escape and the harbormaster Zervos conspiring to falsify tax documents and provide monetary assistance to those impoverished by Sefetu's taxes.[2]

In 48 BCE, Apollodorus sent the Medjay Bayek of Siwa to the village to look for one of his informants, Harkhuf, who had information regarding the Scarab.[3] With his help, Bayek gradually wore down Sefetu's control over the region, until the nomarch finally exposed Harkhuf, had him arrested, and taken to Nikiou Fort. The Medjay then rescued Harkhuf and assassinated Sefetu, before departing to hunt down the Scarab at Letopolis.

It was said that the town was under the protection of Neith, the Egyptian goddess of hunting and war.[4]
