Philippides, also called Pheidippides (c. 530 BCE – c.490 BCE),[1] was a "hemerodrome", a professional runner who served Athens as a herald.
According to Herodotus, Athens sent Philippides to ask Sparta for aid at the battle of Marathon and in the way he met with the god Pan. Pan promised to help the Athenians, by sowing panic and terror in the ranks of their enemies.[2][3] After the battle was won, he ran all the way from Marathon to inform the king and fell down dead after it.[1]
In late 9th century Wincestre, a girl by the name of Mildberg held Philippides in high regard and hoped to become the fastest messenger who ever lived, just like him.[1]
