Idk if we need a page for "British Isles", but this link is incorrect. The UK did not exist in the Viking Age and "Isles" in "British Isles" doesn't refer exclusively to Ireland, which is why we don't try to segment links in a term like this.

Eivor commanding a longship

A longship was a type of ship used widely by the Vikings during their explorations and conquests.

In the 9th century, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir commanded one while traversing England.[1]

Characteristics

As the name suggests, longships were long and slender wooden ships. The bow was often decorated with carven, stylized figureheads.[2] During travel, shields were kept on the sides of the ship, within easy reach.[3]
