The Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, more commonly known as the Teutonic Order, the Deutscher Orden, the Knights Teutonic,[1][2][3] or the Teutonic Knights,[4] were a monastic-military order of German origin that participated in the Third Crusade. Their emblem was a black cross on a white background.
History
During the Crusade, the Teutonic Order aided King Richard I of England in the conquest of Acre, and were later positioned in the city's Middle District.
The Order's first Grand Master, Sibrand, was also secretly a member of the Templar Order. He planned to use the Crusader fleet in Acre to blockade the city and prevent the European kingdoms from sending reinforcements until the Assassin Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad stopped him.
Later in the 13th century, the Teutonic Order had been invited by Polish princes to help defend against their pagan Prussian neighbors. At this, they invaded Eastern Europe, occupying Livonia and Prussia, and then began launching crusades against the Poles, Russians and Lithuanians. In 1242, they invaded western Russia to occupy their own territories after the Russian Principalities were weakened from the Mongol Invasions, but they were defeated by Prince Alexander Nevsky at the Battle of the Ice.
Trivia
- In real-life, the common name for the members of the Teutonic Order is "Teutonic Knights" not "Knights Teutonic", but Assassin's Creed sources use the latter variant.
- In Assassin's Creed Teutonic soldiers spoke English, French and German like other Crusaders, despite the order being predominately German.
- Historically, the Teutonic Order was merely a small brotherhood of German Crusaders who took care of the sick and wounded at 1190 during the Third Crusade and was not recognized as a Christian and military order until 1192.
- The Teutonic Knights were the only faction of the Crusaders that were not present during the Battle of Arsuf since this applies to the fact that the Teutonic Knights were not given recognition as a military order until 1192.
- The achievement "Keeper of the Black Cross" could be earned in the Xbox 360 version of Assassin's Creed for collecting all of the Teutonic flags.
