The Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy was the group of 7 kingdoms that controlled the land that is now England. The collapse of the Heptarchy began in 829CE when Wessex annexed Essex, Kent, and Sussex.[1] The kingdoms of East Anglia, Mercia, and Northumbria all successively fell to Wessex in the century following the Vikings' invasion with the Great Heathen Army, marking the creation of a unified England.
