According to legend, the pair was recruited as mercenaries by [[Vortigern]], ruler of [[United Kingdom|Britannia]], to protect his people from invaders. In exchange, he paid them monthly. The brothers did as Vortigern requested, defeating his enemies, but after the peace was won and more and more Germanic tribes came to live in Britannia, the brothers soon asked Vortigern to increase the payments. They asked for more and more, and eventually, Vortigern refused. In response, the Germanic tribes waged war against all the British tribes, beginning the era of the Anglo-Saxons in Britain.<ref name="Bro"/>

Hengist and Horsa were a pair of mercenary brothers, rumored to be direct descendants of Woden, the Anglo-Saxon name for the Scandinavian god Odin.[1] Their existence is contested by current scholars.[2]

Biography

According to legend, the pair were recruited as mercenaries by Britannia's ruler Vortigern to protect his people from invading tribes In exchange for monthly payments. The brothers defeated his enemies, but when more Germanic groups arrived in the country, the brothers continued to increase their costs until Vortigern refused to pay for their services. Without the brothers' continued protection, the local English tribes quickly fell to the Germanic peoples, giving rise to Britain's Anglo-Saxon era.[1]
