Hengist and Horsa were a pair of mercenary brothers, rumored to be direct descendants of Woden, the Anglo-Saxon name for the Scandinavian god Odin.[1] Their existence is contested by current scholars.[2]
Biography
According to legend, the pair were recruited as mercenaries by Britannia's ruler Vortigern to protect his people from invading tribes In exchange for monthly payments. The brothers defeated his enemies, but when more Germanic groups arrived in the country, the brothers continued to increase their costs until Vortigern refused to pay for their services. Without the brothers' continued protection, the local English tribes quickly fell to the Germanic peoples, giving rise to Britain's Anglo-Saxon era.[1]
