Escanceaster Monastery

Escanceaster Monastery was an Anglo-Saxon Christian monastery build along the River Exe in the eastern part of the region, southeast of the Village of Simonsbath.

In the 9th century, a sizeable force of soldiers attacked the monastery and killed all the monks, piling up their corpses. It was raided multiple times by the Vikings Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, Vagn, and her longship crew. During one of these raids, she discovered a clue of the whereabouts of Saint George's armour set.[1]
