A red-figure kylix depicting the scene of Aegeus consulting the Pythia

Aegeus was a king of Athens, husband of Athira, and father of Theseus in Greek mythology.

When Theseus sailed home after killing the Minotaur, he forgot to change his ships' sails from black to white. Augeus, presuming the ominous sails meant his son was dead, threw himself into the sea.[1]
