A talisman or amulet is an object ascribed with religious or magical powers with the intended purpose of protection for the individuals for whom they are made. They are often worn as portable objects in many ways, but can also be installed permanently in architecture.[1] Often of small size, they can also be referred to as trinkets.[2]

When the Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq pursued the Order of the Ancients in 9th century Baghdad, he carried and wore a number of talismans, some of which he bought from local merchants while others were treasures acquired by solving Enigmas throughout the city.[3]
