Bernard (c. 870 – 891/892) was the illegitimate son of King Charles the Fat, born to him and an unknown concubine. Being the only son of King Charles, Bernard was raised to become the inheritor of the throne by Charles and the king's wife Richardis, who both had different reasons for doing so.[1]
History
The Siege of Paris
Although being born out of wedlock, Bernard was seen as a bastard and found himself raised away from King Charles, under the wing of Queen Richardis. While the queen wished for him not to end up like his father, Bernard still ached to meet his father, unknown of the true horrors behind him. After a while, Bernard was placed in Lisieux to continue his studies and to be far away from the King. He was soon visited by Queen Richardis and her rescuer, jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan.[2]
There, Bernard was left to continue his studies while Richardis and Eivor left to meet with Charles.[2] After the siege occurred, by 887, Bernard and Richardis were hiding in the Slaughtered Calf Tavern, protected by Count Odo's soldiers. However, they were discovered by King Charles and his forces, who killed all of Odo's men. While Richardis was captured again, Bernard ran towards the nearest church and hid from Charles' men. Luckily, he was found by Eivor first. Bernard followed Eivor's advice and went back to his house in Lisieux by following the Seine.[3]
After Charles was soon deposed, Bernard found his way back to Richardis,[4] who survived her trial.[3]
Behind the scenes
Depending on the player's choice, Bernard was either kept away from or brought to King Charles after a truce was found between the king and Sigfred.[5]
