Mactan is a small but densely populated island of the Philippines. Located a few kilometers east of Cebu City, it is part of the wider Cebu province.[1]
The island is notable for the battle that took place on its shores on 27 April 1521, between the native Visayans led by chieftain Lapu-Lapu and the Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan, who sought a Piece of Eden in Lapu-Lapu's possession. The Visayan chieftain used the artifact's power to single-handedly defeat the invading Spanish forces, who retreated after Magellan was killed, delaying Spain's colonization of the Philippines by over four decades.[2]
