Tahira: "We built something I believe in."
Bayek: "You are the first oath taker, savior to many, and a Hidden One."
Tahira: "Don't let our creed fade."
—Tahira and Bayek in her final moments, 38 BCE.[src]-[m]

Tahira (died 38 BCE) was one of the first members of the Hidden Ones. An old acquaintance of the organization's co-founder, the Medjay Bayek of Siwa, she served as a protector of the Egyptian wildlife around the Nile Delta before becoming a Hidden One.

Tahira was later tasked with setting up and overseeing the Hidden Ones bureau in the Sinai, aiding the Nabatean rebels against the Romans until her death 38 BCE.

Biography

Protector of the wildlife

In 49 BCE, shortly after the departure of Bayek from Siwa in his quest of vengeance, Tahira left the village as well, inspired by his role as a Medjay to become a protector herself. Unlike the Medjay, though, Tahira chose to protect the wildlife in Egypt, especially in the Nile Delta. By 48 BCE, she had set up camp located in Herakleion Nome.[1]

That year, Tahira dedicated her life to protecting a pair of crocodiles in the ruins of a shrine to Sobek, which had been targeted by Roman hunters in the region. She later caught sight of Bayek's companion eagle, Senu, calling to her and leading the Medjay to Tahira's campsite location. As they small talked about their personal lives, Tahira asked Bayek to follow her to the ruins of the shrine.[1]

Upon reaching the ruins, Tahira discovered one of the crocodiles was missing, leading her to believe the animal had been captured and brought to a Roman camp in Natho. Bayek and Tahira attacked the camp, freeing the crocodile from her cage and escorting her back to the shrine.[1]

Joining the Hidden Ones

Tahira with Bayek's other associates

In 47 BCE, after Cleopatra's ascension as the sole ruler of Egypt and her alliance with Julius Caesar, Tahira and others, including Phoxidas, Pasherenptah and Phanos the Younger, met with Aya and Bayek in Alexandria, where they expressed their disgust at Cleopatra's betrayal of the country. Together, the group agreed to form an organization to fight against the Order of the Ancients, which was influencing both Cleopatra and Caesar, and preserve the free will of the people.[2]

After the defeat of the Order of the Ancients in Egypt, Tahira demonstrated her commitment to and belief in Bayek by cutting off her ring finger. They subsequently raided a Memphite compound holding children. They sent the newly liberated children home, but one boy hesitated. Tahira asked Bayek if they should take him to their bureau, but he insisted on handling it himself.[3]

Leading the Sinai bureau

Tahira with Bayek and Gamilat

By 38 BCE, Tahira had been placed in charge of overseeing the Hidden Ones in the Sinai, establishing a bureau in the Klysma Nome. That year, the peninsula was in revolt against the Romans, led by the rebel leader Gamilat. Tahira joined forces with Gamilat, leading to an incident in which two Hidden Ones were caught up in a massacre, losing their lives in the process. Desperate for their loss and desiring to aid the rebellion, Tahira sent Bayek a letter, requesting help.[4]

When Bayek arrived in the Sinai, Tahira introduced him to Gamilat. The trio then devised a plan to assassinate Ampelius, Ptahmose, and Tacito, the three lieutenants of Gaius Julius Rufio, a Roman general and member of the Order of the Ancients who oversaw all of the Sinai. They believed that doing so would leave Rufio vulnerable and allow Bayek a chance to kill him.[5]

Bayek later assisted Tahira with assassinating Tacito inside his camp, and together, they helped free the Nabatean rebels from Roman control, thus aiding the rebellion in the Sinai.[6]

Death

Tahira's death

When Bayek returned to debrief with Tahira at the bureau after eliminating both Ampelius and Ptahmose, they and Kashta were ambushed by Rufio's men, who set fire to the bureau. While attempting to escape, the Hidden Ones were captured by the Romans, with both Tahira and Kashta brought as prisoners to Fort Clostra while Bayek was to be crucified. Bayek, however, was saved by Amunet, and together they infiltrated the fort to free Kashta and a heavily wounded Tahira.[7]

Regrouping to safety in the mountains, Tahira was tended to by her fellow Hidden Ones. However, her wounds proved too severe, and she succumbed to her injuries after telling Bayek not to let their Creed fade.[7]

Behind the scenes

Tahira is a character in the 2017 video game Assassin's Creed: Origins, where she is voiced by Botswana actress Warona Setshwaelo. Despite her side quest, "Reunion", canonically taking place before the foundation of the Hidden Ones in "The Aftermath", it is possible to complete it after said memory, and even after Tahira's death in "No Chains Too Thick".

Tahira, طاهرة, is the female variant of the Arabic name Tahir, meaning 'virtuous, pure, chaste'.

Tahira mentions Bayek's night terrors,[8] his list of names,[8] as well as how he seemed better than the last time she saw him,[1] suggesting a very close relationship.
