The Bazaar

The Bazaar, also known as the Great Bazaar,[1] was a grand marketplace in the Karkh district of Baghdad, where most of the merchants from the Abbasid Caliphate and beyond such as China and Constantinople came to do business. Located at the heart of the Tabik sub-district, the Bazaar was particularly known for the yearly Da'irat Al-mal (English: Grand Auction), where exotic and rare goods were put up for auction.

History

During the 9th century, the Order of the Ancients member Ning used the Bazaar as her seat of influence, where she controlled the shipment of goods and items in and out of the city. Her abilities and skills earned her the seat of the Caliph's Treasurer.[2]

In the 860s, Ning sought to acquire an ancient Chinese hairpin and had one of her subordinates, Javed, set up a blockade at Baghdad's harbor to intercept all foreign merchandise.[3] To fund the blockade, Ning and Javed's fellow Order member, Suhail, raised the taxes for all merchants at the Bazaar, especially those of foreign backgrounds. The merchants who failed to comply were typically harassed or even killed by the guards,[4] and this led to a major rise in corruption in Karkh.[1]

While investigating the Ancients' activities in Karkh, the Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq identified both Javed and Suhail as Order members and killed them.[3][5] Later, after gaining entry to the Da'irat Al-mal thanks to his friend Kong, Basim identified Ning as the Treasurer and attended the grand auction in an attempt to acquire the hairpin sought by the Ancient. Upon securing a meeting with Ning, Basim assassinated her, ending the Order's influence in Karkh.[2]
