"Viridovix, the loyal servant of Death. His scythe will ever reap the unworthy."
―Description on Viridovix's statue.[src]

Viridovix was a Gallic gladiator who fought in the Krokodilopolis Arena in Egypt along with his brother, Diovicos, during the mid-1st century BCE.

Biography

Viridovix fought with a large scythe in combat, and he and his brother were undefeated in the Krokodilopolis Arena in Faiyum, Egypt, where they served as fierce rivals of fellow gladiator Kensa.[1] When not in the arena, the brothers served as mercenaries to the Nomarch of Faiyum and member of the Order of the Ancients, Berenike, also known as "the Crocodile".[2]

In 48 BCE, Viridovix and Diovicos were present when Berenike drowned the girl Shadya for stealing a ledger naming members of the Order.[2] While not directly responsible for the young girl's death, the brothers nonetheless felt guilty for their involvement, leading their benefactor to send a letter to the arena owner, Felix Martialis, where she stated that the Gallic Brothers had had an attack of conscience and therefore she would no longer require their services.[3]

Following Shadya's death, the Medjay Bayek of Siwa began hunting the Crocodile to enact revenge and learned of her employment of gladiators from the Krokodilopolis Arena. Alongside Kensa, Bayek climbed in the arena's ranks until the pair faced the Gallic Brothers in combat. Upon being defeated, the brothers confessed to an enraged Bayek that, as heartless as they were, they would never hurt a child. They also revealed Berenike's identity as the Crocodile and Shadya's murderer. Having obtained the information he sought, Bayek spared the brothers and left the arena, throwing Viridovix's scythe to the ground.[3]

After this incident, Viridovix and Diovicos would continue to fight in the arena, even trying to reclaim their title against Bayek upon his re-entry in the arena games, though they were defeated once again.[1]

Behind the scenes

Viridovix shares the same name as a chief of Venelli, a Gallic tribe which fought against Gaius Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars between 58 and 51 BCE.
