Asutai (died c. 1280s), was a prince of the Mongol Empire and the fourth son the Great Khan Möngke. He was, like his father, a member of the Mongolian Templars.
Biography
In August 1259, Asutai followed his father during his campaign against the Song dynasty during the Siege of Diaoyu Castle. Following his father's assassination by the Chinese Assassin Zhang Zhi, Asutai discovered Möngke's body next to one of his commanders, Bayan, who had passed out after being wounded and poisoned by Zhi. Asutai tended to Bayan and, once the latter woke up, commended him for his efforts to protect his father, even if he had failed. He then informed Bayan of his plan to lie to their men that Möngke had died from an illness, and invited the commander to help him lay his father's body to rest.[2]
