Winchester (Old English: Wincestre) is a city and the county town of Hampshire, England. The city served as the capital of Wessex during the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy.[1]

Trivia

  • The original Cathedral of Winchester was built in 648 and later torn down and rebuilt in 1093 by the Normans. 
  • Winchester as settled in the Iron age as Oppidum, later being settled by the Roman Empire in 70 CE as Venta Belgarum
    • The name Winchester comes from the Old English Wintan-caester which was the translation of |Venta Belgarum.
