The Army of the Holy Roman Empire were the military land forces of the Holy Roman Empire until its dissolution in 1806 following the Napoleonic Wars. Unlike conventional armies in Europe at the time, they were not a permanent establishment, instead only being mustered when there was danger.[1]
History
During the French Revolution, the Holy Roman Empire sided with the French royal family and its allies, both because Marie Antoinette was the daughter of the Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, and due to fears of the Revolution spreading throughout Europe.[2] In 1792, the army was involved in two plots in Paris: a spy ring led by the Comte de Gambais,[3] and the commanding of several Chappe signal towers by royalists.[4]
In the first plot, the spies were sent to retrieve information on the city's defenses and deal with Georges Danton, who had rallied the French against the Austrians, though the Parisian Assassin Arno Dorian managed to eliminate the spies and the spymaster before the messages reached their destination.[3] For the second plot, royalists planned to signal the vulnerability of the city defenses to a battalion under the Duke of Brunswick when it marched on Paris. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas had Arno sabotage four of the towers to cut off the royalists' communication with the Duke, foiling the plot.[4]
